Founder's Perspective on International Day of Hope

Founder's Perspective on International Day of Hope

The International Day of Hope, celebrated on 12 July, is a global initiative that reminds us of

the power of hope to sustain lives, strengthen communities, and promote mental and

emotional well-being. Hope is not merely wishful thinking; it is the confidence that a better

future is possible. It nurtures resilience, enables us to overcome adversity, and inspires us to

become a source of encouragement for others. In a world marked by uncertainty and

suffering, hope becomes a light that guides us forward and invites us to walk together in

compassion and solidarity.

For us as followers of Christ, hope has a face and a name: Jesus Christ. Fr. Wolff reminds us

that our hope is not founded on human strength or changing circumstances, but on the One

who gave Himself completely for our salvation:

“Jesus Christ is the foundation of our hope. That is why He came into this world and has

done and suffered so much for us, to secure our salvation, provided only that we are willing to

cooperate with His grace. He shows, above all in the Holy Sacrament, how deeply He desires

our salvation, giving Himself to us personally and substantially. He Himself is present with us

there and longs to hear us say that we surrender ourselves entirely to His guidance. Oh yes,

my dearest Jesus! I give myself entirely to You. Receive my memory, my understanding, and

above all, my will. I desire what You desire, and I desire it, with all its circumstances, exactly

as You Yourself desire it.” (Grondregels, 281).

Jesus became the foundation of our hope because He held nothing back. Through His life,

suffering, death, and abiding presence in the Holy Eucharist, He gave Himself entirely so that

we might have life and never lose hope. His complete self-giving reveals that true hope is

born from love that sacrifices itself for others.

Inspired by Fr. Wolff, we are invited not only to place our hope in Christ but also to imitate

Him. As Jesus gave Himself completely, so too are we called to offer ourselves generously in

service, with compassion and love. By surrendering our lives to God’s will and making

ourselves available to those who are struggling, lonely, or discouraged, we become living

signs of Christ’s presence. We become, by God’s grace, a foundation of hope in the lives of

others.

On this International Day of Hope, may we renew our trust in Christ, the unfailing foundation

of our hope, and pray for the courage to give ourselves wholeheartedly in His service. In

doing so, we participate in His mission of bringing light where there is darkness, strength

where there is weakness, and hope where it is most needed.
