In the month of June as we honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a symbol of divine love, mercy, and self-giving, we reflect on the early life and celebrate the 138th birthday of Servant of God Mary Glowrey, whose heart, too, burned with a deep love for God and for the suffering. Her early life was a quiet yet profound journey of faith, love, and virtue.
Born on June 23, 1887, in Victoria, Australia, Mary was shaped by a deeply Catholic home where prayer, compassion, and service were lived out daily. Her family's Marian practices, especially during May and devotion to the Most Sacred Heart in June, nurtured in her a tender love for the Blessed Virgin, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and a profound reverence for Jesus in the Eucharist. Even as a child, she longed to do God's will in everything, echoing the very heart of Christ's mission. Her devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, her fervent desire for the Eucharist, and her early resolve to serve "even the Indians" reveal a soul attuned to God's call from a young age.
family prayer, household responsibility, and encounters with suffering and kindness all prepared her for a life of extraordinary mission.
Mary’s desire to receive Jesus in the Eucharist was fervent. After Confirmation, she was deeply moved by the idea that she was now a soldier of Christ. The symbolic slap on her cheek during the rite made a lasting impression: it was a call to suffer courageously for Jesus. From that moment on, Mary was determined to live a life of purpose and service, pondering always what she could do for her Lord.
Mary’s life was marked by quiet sacrifice, a readiness to serve, and a love that extended to the poorest and the most forgotten. Her early encounters with charity and suffering ignited a lifelong commitment to healing both body and soul, culminating in her vocation as a doctor and religious sister serving the people of India.
In this sacred month, as we gaze upon the Heart of Jesus, pierced for love of us, we are reminded of Servant of God Mary Glowrey, whose heart was formed in that same spirit of mercy, humility, and total self-gift. Her life stands as a radiant reflection of the Sacred Heart: a heart that loved deeply, served humbly, and gave generously.
A soul anchored in God.
A heart open to the world.
A woman of faith.
A life of virtue.
