A Collective Voice for Dignity, Equality and Inclusion held on 7th April 2026, Vijayawada

A Collective Voice for Dignity, Equality and Inclusion held on 7th April 2026, Vijayawada-The historic Andhra Pradesh Trans/Hijra Swabhimana Sabha, organized by JMJ Social Service Society (JMJ SSS) in partnership with Hum Is Deshwasi, Sneha Siri Sadhikarika Welfare Society, and allied organizations, marked a major milestone for transgender and hijra communities in the state. Held in Vijayawada, the event brought together over 1,200 participants — community members, activists, civil society representatives, and policymakers — united under the theme of Swabhimana (Self-Respect) to promote dignity, equality, and social inclusion.

The Sabha focused on pressing issues affecting transgender and hijra persons, including access to education, healthcare, employment, housing, identity recognition, and protection from discrimination. A vibrant public rally through the city raised awareness and increased visibility for transgender rights, drawing community attention and public solidarity.

At Tummalapalli Kalakshetram, community leaders, activists, and legal experts engaged in in-depth discussions on welfare measures and pathways to equal opportunity. Speakers highlighted practical strategies for strengthening legal literacy, improving access to government schemes, and expanding livelihood opportunities. Chief Guest Dr. Rayapati Sailaja, Chairperson of the Andhra Pradesh State Women Commission, affirmed institutional support for inclusive welfare initiatives and pledged to work with stakeholders to advance protective policies.

Under the leadership of Sr. Mary Kumari JMJ, JMJ SSS has been consistently empowering transgender persons through targeted awareness programs, leadership training, advocacy campaigns, livelihood support, legal literacy workshops, and dialogues with government officials. The Sabha reinforced solidarity across diverse communities, inspired confidence among participants, and amplified collective demands for justice, dignity, and equal rights.

By centering Swabhimana, the event not only celebrated community resilience but also mapped concrete steps toward policy engagement, social acceptance, and sustainable support systems for transgender and hijra communities in Andhra Pradesh.
